Home Care Instructions for Appliances Your Expander

  • You must avoid all sticky, chewy and hard foods that could loosen or break the appliance
  • DO NOT play with the expander with your tongue or fingers.
  • You must brush after every meal, keep appliance clean, especially the gums around the bands.
  • It may take several days to get used to the expander, it is normal for there to be some discomfort, if this is the case take Advil or Tylenol.
  • Gaps between your front teeth may appear throughout treatment. This is normal and shows that the expander is doing its job.
  • If the bands around the teeth become loose, place the band back on the tooth and make an appointment.
  • Please call if any breakage occurs, bring any broken parts with you.
  • There will be a charge for repairs or replacement if the appliance is broken due to improper foods or playing with the expander.
  • You will turn the expander the appropriate times as discussed with the doctor.
  • If you accidentally skip a day just continue with the regular turns, do not turn twice the next day.

Home Care Instructions for Orthodontics Your Braces

  • You must avoid all sticky, chewy, or hard food. No gum, popcorn, beef jerky. Cut certain foods into small pieces such as; apples, carrots, steak, pizza crust (tougher foods).
  • There may be a charge for excessive orthodontic repairs due to improper foods.
  • Please brush three times a day, after every meal as well as flossing once daily (we suggest investing in a water pik). A home fluoride rinse is recommended throughout your treatment.
  • We need to see you once a month, if a month is skipped add that time to your treatment.
  • If a bracket becomes loose have a parent help remove it. The rubber tie needs to be removed before the bracket will come out.
  • If a wire comes out of a band use tweezers to replace. If that is not possible, clip the wire with fingernail clippers behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If there is any discomfort use dental wax.
  • After each ortho appointment your teeth will be sore for a couple of days, eat soft foods and take Advil or Tylenol
